The island of Vis earns the title of the farthest stretch of inhabited land from mainland yacht charter Croatia. For this reason mainly, it was chosen as a military base and thus it was off limits to almost everyone. After 1989 however, people realized the potential of the island and now it’s considered one of the best locations in the country.
Because it’s relatively far away from the mainland and because the infrastructure was almost non-existent, there is a lot of unspoiled nature here, with deserted beaches, and crystal-clear water. Recently, there was an increase in the boat routes which travel to the island, so that now access is somewhat easier.
There are two major towns on the island, Vis Town and Komiza and they enjoy a distinctly authentic feel as do the local restaurants which are appreciated by all visitors who come here. Apart from the towns and the local cuisine, Vis island has some other attractions, especially for yacht charter sailor who come here for the secluded bays like Rukavac, Stiniva, Milna, Srebrna, located on the southern side of the island which is the less populated, even during the summer.
Also, the island is home to an important piece of yacht charter Croatia’s history, which is also the reason the island’s name first appeared in the history books and gained notoriety. It’s because here, on Vis, there is a certain cave from where Marshall Tito ran his base of operations during World War II, masterminding his strategies against the Partisans. For this reason, this place is now known as Tito’s Cave and it is accessible to the public, on the south side of Mount Hum, after you completed the 245 stone step journey up there.
There are also many diving opportunities along the island shores thanks to the calm, clear waters. There are diving centers both in Komiza and Vis Town where you can get additional info, gear and even specialized help with your trip.
