One of the most popular islands in the northern Adriatic and indeed in all of yacht charter Croatia, Rab is a favorite of the tourists who come to enjoy the beauty of the Kvarner Bay. Rab town is the largest and most important settlement on the island and possibly one of the oldest.
The city lies in a protected bay on the western part of the island and it dates back to the 12th century when the old settlement present there was fortified. The town then was sold to the Venetians which explains why most of the architecture today is of Venetian influence.
Yacht charter Rab is organized around 3 straight streets that run parallel to the sea. However, more interesting and striking are the churches in town, the largest being St. Mary the Blessed which dates back to the 13th century. Other interesting churches are St Justine which has been turned into a museum of sacred arts, the chapel of St. Christopher who is also the patron saint of the island which is also called today the Lapidarium.
Each of the four churches has its own bell tower which rises over the other buildings in town and represents a local landmark, a reason of pride for those who live in the city. The back country region is also very nice to visit, especially from the waterm which is why you can book a boat tour from the marina which is situated behind the small cape where the Old Town sits.
A tour by yacht around the island will make for a lovely trip which will show just how wonderful this part of the Adriatic really is. The island of Rab as a whole, not only the town with the same name is famous throughout the Mediterranean as a place of strong cultural heritage, of natural reservations and of wonderful sailing conditions facilitated by the seemingly endless sunshine present here throughout the year.
